Can I use a new home security system with existing equipment in Savannah?

As you go about building your home’s security, you could have questions about if you'll have to buy brand-new alarms and sensors or if you can keep your home security system with existing equipment in Savannah.

If you have a device like a interior camera or a motion detector, you might be in luck. You should be able to take your old devices and move them to your Vivint security system, but only if they are built with Z-wave sensors and are compatible with the new system. Here are some common Savannah scenes where you could want to use your existing device and slip it into your new system.

You’re moving into a place with security alarms

A new house may come with a home security system. All the alarms and cameras function well, are hung in the best spaces, and are ready to go. In this example, just pick up the phone to call and start a new monitoring contract. A Vivint installer will still come out to ensure there are no compatibility issues, and they could offer options on upgrades. It's a preliminary appointment, and you can get your monitoring set up without worrying about any new devices -- unless you get some new devices.

The previous owners can give an existing Vivint contract to your family for a one-time transfer fee to make the transfer a snap. If the owners are moving to an apartment or smaller home, transferring the home security service might be an addendum of the sale.

You need to move and take your old devices with you

You may need to bring along your old smart devices with you to a new house when you move. That’s fairly easy to accomplish, as modern components are wireless. You can take down each component yourself or contact a Vivint expert to come and take care of your devices. Then a pro will hang the same features -- and any smart services you need to add -- in your new place. The home security contract will remain the same.

You use a simple device and need to build up

Your doorbell camera, garage door sensor, or small motion detector made you notice the advantages of a home security system, and now you need to expand. Don't worry too much if you’ll be tossing away that starter component because it could integrate with your new system. Security companies like Vivint have built their programs from the ground up and allow 3rd party alarms and cameras.

You might lose the codes and clips you collected, as they probably won't move over into a different mobile app. But your component will still handle like it did when it was a stand-alone alarm or camera. You may even see a few new actions that you can use now that it's part of a bigger smart home.
